Coffee Talk #125: Your Asian Gaming Vacation

Thanks for keeping the site going while I’m away. My trip is almost over and things will be back on a regular schedule soon. For now, I wanted to ask what you’d do if you had one week in Asia. For the sake of context, I’m going to assume you’ll want to include some gamer-related activities in your Asian vacation. Would you want to checked out the Internet cafes in Taiwan? Visit game companies in Japan? Or maybe catch a professional StarCraft match at a stadium in Korea?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, JR’s excellent chipotle ketchup, Gilbert Arenas’ adventures in a halfway house, or Tiger Woods’ return to golf, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

There are so many different and diverse gaming activities in Asia. In some countries, consoles are king. In other countries, online gaming at Internet shops is where it’s at. Professional gaming in Korea is one of the most unique phenomenons I’ve ever come across; pro gamers have corporate sponsors, have their own baseball cards, and are pretty big celebrities in the country. So if I had to pick, I’d love to watch a professional train for a tournament and watch him/her compete in it.

Now it’s your turn! What would you do during your Asian gaming vacation?

  1. Def watch a pro SC match. Maybe visit a real massage parlor. I'd love to see Tokyo.

Within the next 3 years I'm going to Japan.

  2. Surprisingly, not much game wise. I would be all over Tokyo shopping and site seeing the rest of rest of Japan. Maybe learn some Ninjutsu (sp?) and Bushido at while I'm there. Not really sure what I'd like to do out side of Japan though. I'll have to give it some thought.

  3. I would visit some of the cool restaurants over there, definitely check out one of the pokecenters, try and find Shigeru Miyamoto's house, learn how to play starcraft, and try to find some of the underground (figuratively speaking, because I have heard they are in some tall buildings) arcades I have heard about.

You know, the usual. I might also try to find Hattori Hanzo.

  4. Speaking of Pokecenters, I brought my Pokewalker to work today. Pore Zubat has had to walk 6639 steps so far today. I'm going to have to return him to my DS tonight so he can get some well earned R&R.

  5. Does skateboarding down the Great Wall of China with a DS in your pocket count as "game-related activity?"

  6. I'd want to get totally balled up and almost drown myself competing in Sansuke (Ninja Warrior).

And then I'd look for a cheeseburger and complain about how there's no good pizza.

  7. with smartguy

just want to see tokyo…i hear the phillipines are beautiful too

and to be honest guys, when im on vacation…i could really care less about games

  8. Im with thundercracker. Ill visit anything gamer related or not. Electronics/gadget shopping, sight seeing; idk i would do anything and everything i can afford. Watching tna impact and worst ending to a match ever between team 3-D vs the band.

  9. Gears of War 3 has been announced!!! Yay!

The only reason I'm upset is that I had to learn about this from the frick'n Christian Science Monitor and/or Jimmy Fallon. What the hell is wrong with the traditional game journalists? Of all the gaming websites out there, nobody could have gotten that little nugget out of Cliffy before the Fallon show?

  10. @ Gears

Boo!!! Im probably in the minority here (not because of my skin you silly person) but I strongly dislike those games. I played some of the first one and watched my bro and best friend play co op 1 and 2. I just don't get it.

  11. @Iceman

It had already leaked that Cliffy B., was going to announce Gears 3 on the Fallon show. I think they (Fallon) must've paid to get the exclusivity. Fallon likes to consider himself a gamer and try to cater to the gamer crowd but i haven't liked him and was upset with G4 for trying to endorse him as a late night geek host.

  12. @ Big Blak

I'm in the minority with you. I bought Gears 2 and sold it within a month because of several reasons that I disliked it.

    1) Not very tactical… way more aggressive than I prefer.

    2) Short, lame story.

    3) I felt like my character weighed 5000 lbs whenever I ran.

    4) Characterization was minimal and at times stereotypical.

    5) The kids online.

    6) The immature adults online.

    7) Not very user friendly.

    8) Non-adaptive controls

I could go on, but I'll stop there.

  13. @Tokz_21

Yeah I'm usually upset with anything G4 does. The channel has gone so far downhill it's hardly a gaming channel at all. Kind of like how MTV has almost nothing to do with music television.

  14. @bsukenyan

Oh don't remind me about reality tv pusher MTV! i hate that channel more than anything.

  15. @Tokz @Big Blak

Yeah it is a terrible channel, but I just feel like that is what G4 went to and why I really don't like them. I'm tired of cops and cheater all the time. Ninja Warrior was cool the first 10 times, but so was survivor…now I don't really like either of them. That's why I now skip that channel on my tv.

  16. @bsukenyan

I just watch the aots clips on the g4tv website and when they go to the expo's but i'm done watching like i used to.

  17. I stopped watch back before Olivia joined AOTS. Only watched that channel a few time since then. (Nothing against Olivia, but when XPlay stopped being a five times a week show I stopped caring.)

  18. @Tokz

I usually like sessler's soapbox, sometimes morgan's minute is ok. but I rarely ever watch those anymore. I can get other people's opinions a lot quicker from other places that I already go on a constant basis anyways. No need to make an extra stop somewhere else.

    @Sandrock

How long has that been? I don't really know how new she is. She is ok, but yeah they don't even make xplay a daily show, and aots is ok I guess, but not worth the hassle of going to them only for their one show that actually deals with technology.

  19. @bsukenyan

i watch those too. I go to many sites to get their opinions. I just dont rely on those mofo's it's tough but i do appreciate seeing the eye candy once in awhile.

  20. I don't care for the personalities on that channel. The shows are too asinine for me to glean any knowledge from. Seriously, how many lame ass jokes and heaps of apathy does there need to be? Olivia Munn should just pose nude and get it over with. Otherwise I have no care what so ever for her. Her tv personality sucks and drives me away. I prefer when the station was tech tv. G4 became too stereotypical gamer for me.

  21. @Smartguy

I know a lot of people who stopped watching because they don't like the "personalities" that sessler and periera have on camera, how they feel they fit the more stereotypical nerd/gamer guy and that it's inaccurate.

Olivia Munn can definitely pose nude, no complaints. But she is annoying as hell to listen to.

  22. @Sandrock

She didn't show the whole prize I thought? Just a bikini shot.

    @bsukenyan

I know I'm a smartass and a gamer…but I'm also not batshit stupid like they seem to think their viewers are. Seriously it seems they market to 14 year olds and dumbasses who got into a wreck and will let JG Wentworth buy their settlement for nickels on the dollar.

  23. @Smartguy

Oh I agree, they give out their information like everyone who watches the shows has never been exposed to technology before. Granted I have seen some of those types of people before (in GameInformer magazine a reader wrote in and asked for what the magazine meant when they talked about the gameplay of the games that were being reviewed), but that is not the entire audience, and I think they lose a lot of viewers because of the way they present all of their shows and information.

  24. @ Smartguy;

1,000 Bonus points for working in a J.G. Wentworth and G4TV jab in the same sentence. My wife and I always roll our eyes in disgust when we see that a-hole's commercials. Not because they are so gawd-awfully tacky, but because you'd have to be several synapses short of a brain in order to actually sell your settlement to a company. We have the same reaction for all those reverse-mortgage commercials that seem to target the elderly and stupid.

  25. @iceman

Haha, I'm glad someone caught it. My jokes aren't as good as Thunder and N8R.

  26. I;m actually very interested in feudal Japanese culture, so I'd check out any places (museums, etc) that had info on that era. Then I'd find a way to sneak in to Square Enix.

  27. hi im wilfred brimley….ive got diabetes, liberty general can help you live a better life
