Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the NXT season one rookies being renamed “The Nexus”, the stupidity of penalty-kick shootouts, or class action suits against Apple, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Here’s another simple Coffee Talk topic for you: who’s your favorite small publisher? In the gaming industry, it seems like every other story is about Activision or Electronic Arts, but smaller publishers are important to the business as well. I love that Atlus bring quirky Japanese games to America. I love that Nicalis helps small games like Cave Story get attention. Small publishers give gamers access to lesser known games and developers. Publishers like Atlus and Nicalis add variety and character to a cookie-cutter business.

As for my favorite boutique publisher, I’m going to go with NIS America. I love Nippon Ichi Software games, especially Disgaea and its various spin-offs. The company brings over loads of great RPGs that are different, cute, and fun. Plus, prinnies are awesome.

Now it’s your turn! Who’s your favorite small publisher?

It seems to me that a lot of small publishers make a lot of hand held games and I don't own a hand held gaming device so I'm not to familiar. However, I do have some XBL arcade games and two of my favs are Chime and E4 (Every Extend Extra Extreme) so who ever published those gets a high five from me!!!

tokz_21 says:

to be honest i don't really think i have any games on my consoles from small publishers. My iphone maybe donut games traffic rush and this other one i forget the name. Would gameloft be considered a small publisher??

@NXT Season 1 cast

I was disappointed that they decided to call them Nexus. how lame!

@penalty kicks

i don't see how they are stupid? they are like free throws except they happen less frequently unless you are in the knockout stages of the world cup.

@class action suit

now i don't see how this goes to court. this is just common sense no? especially when nokia tried to make fun of apple only to find that their phones especially the N71 mentions the same time about touching the antenna's in their manual.

@tokz_21 I hate when football games are decided in shootouts. I think it's incredible lame. It would be like a basketball game ending a three-point shooting contest or a baseball game ending in a home run derby.

The argument is that football is more physically taxing since the players are running hard for 90 minutes. I don't care. They're highly paid professional athletes and they should run around for as long as it takes.

tokz_21 says:

@rpad

i see your point now but you have to consider the fact that some of the teams aren't very good to score or just have great defenses. If they play 90 plus the extra 30 mins overtime that's a lot. you just can't keep playing until one team scores or until the an overtime period is done. Maybe if FIFA would allow for one more sub in the OT it will be great but those old farts have their ways set.

@tokz_21 For EPL, Premiere League, and all FIFA tournaments, they should play to the death.

tokz_21 says:

@rpad

haha. i'm hoping you don't mean that literally. I know i feel like dying when i run for an hour, i can imagine how some of those guys must feel if they have to run for two hours plus.

SlickyFats says:

I guess I have to go with Atlus. I have been playing the heck out of 3D Dot Game Heroes. Everyone I show it to loves it also.

bsukenyan says:

@Ray @Tokz

Speaking of playing to the death…back in high school a friend of mine had the idea to make the 400 meter sprint a battle as well. 2 teams of two people (a runner and a "heavy" or whatever you wanna call them) start back to back and when the gun goes off both teams start running in their respective directions. The goal is for the runner of each team to cross the start/finish line, and the "heavy" is the defense player. At about halfway around the track it becomes a bloody battle royal for who can escape, outrun, and/or demolish the opposing team.

This continues in a bracket style for each meet until there is one overall winner. That is playing to the death. lol.

tokz_21 says:

@bsu

sounds like fun! I want to see that covered on Espn "the ocho"

Big Blak says:

DA NA NA, DA NA NA…..THE OCHO!!!

N8R says:

If Bethesda counts… I have to say Bethesda.

@ BSU

I had a gym teacher in high school who would say that swimming wasn't a sport because there was no defense. His idea was to put sharks or alligators in the water.

tokz_21 says:

@Big Blak

Espn should've come out with the OCHO. I would've watched it.

@n8r

another thing i would be interested in watching.

bsukenyan says:

@Tokz

It always seemed like an interesting idea to me, it would take some skill to match up teams based on speed and strength.

@N8R

That definitely would make it more of a challenge, but that 500 m swim would be awful.

tokz_21 says:

@bsu

you know that i think about it, isn't that what roller derby is? only it's one on one and you are going in opposite directions?

N8R says:

@ tokz and BSU

I always thought that baseball would be more interesting if the basemen had bats too.

Or just vicious dogs.

tokz_21 says:

@n8r

mmmm that seems a little extreme to me.

bsukenyan says:

@N8R

Could be fun…guard dogs would be a plus.

@Tokz

That is very similar to roller derby. But there are no skates, it is a much longer track which is more grueling, and it would be more team friendly with the two people teams and the bracket style competition.

RRODisHere says:

You're looking at a PS+ subscriber. I did not plan on getting it but when I really looked at what they offered it paid for itself. I bought the $17 3 month subscription and downloaded Wipeout HD. Wipeout HD is $20 alone so as you can see PS+ paid for itself for me, not to mention the other stuff.

smartguy says:

Atlus and Doublefine. Good stuff!

Nightshade386 says:

Double Fine. No doubt.

Nightshade386 says:

For anyone who's interested, the first reviews are up on the new site:

http://www.gameseyeview.com/2010/06/29/alpha-prot…

http://www.gameseyeview.com/2010/06/29/blur-view/

Double Fine is a developer, not a publisher.

smartguy says:

shit. DAMNIT

thundercracker says:

they are totally giving away a tesla roadster on the price is right….or trying to

bsukenyan says:

Now my toolbar says it is at 99,758!!

bsukenyan says:

get it moving down, lol. I have never noticed it actually adjusting during the day, usually just sometime at night.

@bsukenyan That's awesome!!!

@Everyone Thanks to everyone for helping the site's Alexa ranking crack the top 100,000!!! That's an outstanding number for such a short period of time! *proud*

tokz_21 says:

*wishes his alexa toolbar worked* :(
