Coffee Talk #168: Your Console and Electronics Updating Patterns

Yesterday I updated the software for my HTC Evo 4G and PlayStation 3. Both had updates that were released yesterday. I was actually surprised that I updated so soon. Usually I wait a few days to see if there are any bugs or annoying quirks caused by the new software. For various reasons (okay, it was cloudy…and updating firmware makes me happy), I jumped the gun and didn’t following my usual updating pattern.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Roger Federer’s upset at Wimbledon, red pandas, or Stumptown’s Costa Rica Brumas Del Zurqui, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

How do you handle updates for your consoles, mobile phones, etc.? Do you update straight away, like I did yesterday? Do you wait a few days to make sure everything is kosher? Perhaps you only update when it’s absolutely necessary, like when a certain game require a newer firmware version. Kindly share your console and consumer electronics updating patterns in the comments section.

  1. I like to wait a few days, just in case people report that the new update activates Skynet.

  2. I update my consoles right away, but only because they basically force you to.

I have never owned a cell phone that had and update released. I updated my BB Bold on my own via another carrier who apparently support updates whereas AT&T doesn't.

    F#%& YOU!!!!

Here is Playstation's reply to my question about the fact that I just paid for a new Qore subscription, but I want PS Plus now too,

    "Hello Jason,

Thank you for writing us with your concerns regarding your recent QORE renewal. We understand that you would like to purchase the PlayStation(R) Plus subscription, and that you would not want to pay the full price for as it includes QORE as well. Unfortunately we are not able to refund your QORE purchase or provide the PlayStation Plus subscription at a discount. We apologize for this inconvenience.

    Regards,

    Richard K."

    Thanks for nothing.

  4. UPDATE:

I e-mailed them back and let them know how I felt about it. Their new response:

    "Hello Jason,

I apologize for the experience that this is causing you. The fact that we are not able to refunds your purchase is not because we want to cause you to purchase extra items that you don't need. I understand your position and I agree, why buy something twice? We are not able to refunds or exchange the items because according to the PlayStation(R)Network Terms of Service we are not able to authorize refunds for any type of purchase. If you were to purchase the PlayStation(R) Plus plan you would of course receive extra content which you normal QORE subscription does not include such as:

    Full Game Trials

    Automatic Downloads

    PlayStation®Store Discounts

    Exclusive Offers

    Select Early Demos

    Priority Beta Invitations

    Free Games

    Free Downloads

Keep in mind that more items are to be added in the coming weeks.

    Regards,

    Richard K."

wow, talk about avoiding the issue and not giving you a direct answer. You should ask for a supervisor.

I think I am just going to give up. I am not going to buy Playstion Plus right now because of all of this. Its worth the $50 but not the $75 I'd end up paying for the same content.

  7. @SlickyFats I'm surprised you thought that Sony would give you anything. I'm also surprised that someone subscribed to Qore — you're the only one I know.

  8. @Slicky

You should do to Sony what this guy did to EA. Found this earlier today and was pretty amazed. http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/crysis-series/

    @Topic

I usually update my console right away (games too) because it is usually quick and dirty and convenient. I updated my ipod touch right away and now I kind of wish I hadn't, it is running so slowly I have barely used it since a couple days after the update installed because it runs so sluggish. I have only checked my email on it and maybe listened to a couple songs. But it messed up the songs once or twice when the screen got turned during the song. It is making me think twice about installing updates right away now.

I paid for my second year a few months ago. Its $25 per year (or something like that)

I didn't get Qore for any of the videos or behind the scenes stuff, I just got it for the "free" stuff. I got several full games (7 games) out of it and a couple of private Beta invites (3 I think) also free Themes and Avatars.

And I didn't actually expect Sony to refund me anything. I had already read that they wouldn't. I just wanted to see what their excuse was. And the ToS excuse is pretty much all I needed, because I did clearly agree to them (without reading of course). I am going to wait a while to get PS+.

  11. I tried three posts on this article and it wouldn't let me post them? Microsoft finally caught up to me for badmouthing Kinect didn't they, and then kicked me off? haha

  12. @Ray

Gotcha. That makes sense. It was a link to an EA forum that I stumbled upon earlier today where a man from England filed a complaint to EA over Crysis 2 and had to go as far as contacting the CEO to get anyone to really read his complaints and requests. Seemed like something @SlickyFats would be interested in reading due to his issue with Sony and Qore.

  13. @SlikyFats

Why did you think they would refund your money? You bought the service. That's just like when consoles have a price drop, do you think they will refund the price drop money to all of the people that bought the console the day before the price drop? Of course not.
