Coffee Talk #186: Make Your Own Limited Edition Console

The Halo: Reach special edition Xbox 360 has me thinking about limited edition consoles again. Specifically, I was wondering about the kind of consoles you ladies and gents can dream up. If you could design your own special edition console, what game would it be for? What would it look like?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Intelligentsia’s Edelweiss Finagro Estate Tanazania, if North Korea will unleash bombs, or the Angeles snagging Danny Haren, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

As for me, the white Final Fantasy XIII PlayStation 3 is just about perfect for me. I love the Final Fantasy franchise, I love white, I love pink, and I love subtle Japanese design. I don’t think I could come up with a better console on my own. I’m pretty sure someone pulled this design out of my dreams.

Now it’s your turn! Bust out your inner Jony Ive and design your own limited edition console in the comments section!

  1. I always wanted one of those Pikachu GBA sp's, then I wanted one of the Pikachu DS lite's.

    Right now I think a Left 4 Dead Xbox 360 would be pretty cool to have. But I think any of them that are customized to be partially see through and have LED's would be cool to have. For a while now I have thought it would be cool to use a cooling kit like what would be used on a desktop and put it on a 360, but I have no clue how I would do that and I'm not gonna risk messing one up for that.

    ps- I think the PSP commercials have subliminal messages somewhere in them. All of a sudden yesterday I began to want a PSP (after another DS of course) and I don't know why. No specific games or other reasons, I just want one all of a sudden.

  2. I would think that a Justice League limited edition PS3 for the upcoming DCU would be awesome! You can have it white with the JL sticker or decal or whatever you want to call it. You can also have a black one with the DCU villains.

    Congratulations to n8 on his new job

    @Intelligentsia coffee

    I'm still working on getting into coffee. I'm up to 2 cups……….a week that is, ha.

    @North Korea

    If Kim Jong Il doesn't do it now, he'll never do it. I can see the Koreas get back together once he dies or gets assassinated. I feel bad for them especially seeing it up close and personal.

    @Angels

    i don't know if getting a pitcher who has a better record in the beginning of the year but fades after the all star break is a pitcher i want but to each their own. I do like the tantrum Joe Saunders threw after he found out he was traded. priceless.

  3. @N8;

    Live a very evil, malicious and selfish life and that will be your reward in hell after you pass. Too bad the game doesn't have a multi-player component, because then you could inflict some torture on Hitler, Stalin and P.T. Barnum.

    @topic;

    Expanding on Bsukenyan's idea, I would love to see a zombie-themed console (Dead Rising, Resident Evil, Left 4 Dead, Plants vs. Zombies, etc.). For the eyes, there should be red and yellow LEDs that light up when you turn the console on. Also, every time your console RRODies on you, the zombies will start howling and groaning… which will be accomplished by placing a microphone by the area inside the Xbox that scratches up the disk enhanced with auto-tune.

    I still can't drink coffee at all…just cannot bring myself to do it. The closest I can get is a hot apple cider or hot chocolate (both are good at any time in the year!)

    @Iceman

    I like the Plants vs. Zombies idea a lot!! That would be an awesome console, actually now that you say that anything with a PopCap game theme would be cool to see. A zombie theme is one that I just have not seen. There have been some cool customized 360's I have seen for Halo, Half-Life, Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas that are all pretty cool- someone really needs to do a Zombie themed one though. @N8 could probably do some cool things with putting the graphics together, but I would have no clue how to go from there.

    @topic again

    I think it would also be cool to see someone do a customization of one of the 360 slims to where the case is made out of LEGOs…I might have to think of what pieces you would have to use and work on building one…haha. You would be able to customize that one a whole lot by adding anything LEGO that you could possibly want. My mind is racing now with ideas. lol.

  5. @bsu

    oh neither can i. I love hot chocolate but at times i need the caffeine to keep me going. Your lego idea intrigues me. please share when you can.

  6. @Tokz

    Well I am thinking of a project that I am working on right now (all hush hush and everything, it will be revealed soon) which involves LEGO's, and the whole customization scene with LEGO's can be pretty cool sometime (I will reveal some more cool stuff about that after I reveal the first project). But when I was younger I always thought it would be cool to build a huge city that actually looked good (color coordinated instead of just using random bricks), slightly realistic looking, and where everything worked with each other to make the whole model complete. I mean I wanted to go all out, use the LEGO train sets to build a whole train system around the city, make realistic buildings like having a police station, fire station, bank, port with ships and coast guard, several houses, grocery store…etc. You get the idea, the whole works. Problem is, that costs a TON of money. In all honesty if I ever did that someday I could sink several hundred into that project. Possibly into the thousands of dollars depending on how intricate I made it. And then on top of that have enough people in the whole thing to make it realistic (the minifigs are always the most expensive part it seems).

    I digress, lol.. The overall point is that there are a lot of things you can do with the LEGO's, the themes could be done in so many ways that even if a ton of people did something like I proposed with their 360's, almost no one would have anything remotely close to the other. You could do a lot of aquatic stuff, a fire fighter theme, a pirate theme, jungle theme, etc. Build the 360 LEGO case into any desired theme that you want.

    For a jungle theme you could make the 360 case out of browns and greens. Make another big ledge several inches away from the 360 case, then use the bridge pieces to gap the two sections and put all kinds of bushes and trees and alligators and minifigs and animals, etc in the middle. Create whatever scene you wanted to depict.

    You could use a bunch of gray pieces and the mountain sides with some various white pieces to make a huge gigantic mountain with ice climbers around the 360 and make tents and use some of the arctic set pieces and minifigs to create mountainside base camp near the bottom of the 360.

    If you were a Star Wars fan, you could build the Death Star around the 360 to have a globe case and build some of the Star Wars models of ships close by as well.

    To be simple, you could simply make a section of a simple town around or next to your 360.

    I could keep going at this for a while most likely, but I will stop there. Come to think of it, I was only thinking of possibilities where the 360 is standing up…there is tons more stuff you could do if it is laying on its side. Also, this could just as easily be done with a PS3 or Wii I am sure. I have seen customizations with both of those consoles as well. The majority of them on the net seem to be 360's though. Hope I didn't bore anyone too much with this.

  7. @tokz_21 @bsukenyan Have you guys had "good" coffee? There's a world of difference between what's served in offices, cafeterias, etc. and coffee brewed from fresh beans.

  8. @rpad

    i do. have a coke every now and then. i like more non caffeine drinks like sprite and sierra mist. Maybe i'll stop having coffee then since my reactions are not quite normal.

  9. @Ray

    I don't think I have ever tried "good" coffee. I wouldn't even know what good coffee is supposed to smell or taste like or where to get it cheaply just to try it. I do like to smell the coffee beans isle of the grocery store though. They are like legal whip-its to me. haha.

    @Tokz

    Most of the other stuff around it would not be to scale whatsoever, but honestly any of the sets that LEGO has could be turned in to an adaption for this. If you look through enough of the set types and kind of see all of the ones for a certain type together then you can really start to think of them all working together for something like this.

  10. @bsu

    very interesting. well i'm sold. maybe i'll try turning my ps3 in a millenium falcon!

    This is about how much room you would have to work with at most. Although I think this model is discontinued now, it is the largest LEGO set ever produced. It also comes with a large price tag. With enough basic pieces and some specialty ones though you could probably design your own.

    @Ray

    Next time I am up in Chicago I will have to find the place and try it out.

  12. @bsu

    the flickr pic is not showing up on IE or mobile safari on my iphone. Also that Intelligentsia is by the cultural center downtown across the street from Millenium Park. I checked the link after rpad said there was one in Chicago. I will try some out now since i know where there is one now.

  13. @Tokz

    The cultural center downtown? Isn't that right next to the last stop for the South-Shore line? That is always where we come from. Either way I looked up the place after he mentioned it too, I've probably passed it plenty and just didn't know it.

    Hmm, I just uploaded that picture to my flickr, I don't know why the links I post for pics never work! lol.

  14. @bsu

    yes the cultural center downtown. I wasnt sure if you took the south shore line into downtown so i didnt want to bring it up and possibly confuse you.

  15. @Big Blak

    yes, he got the job and started today! Our little n8 is growing up soooo fast *sniff* *sniff*

  16. @Tokz

    Yep the South Shore line is how we always come in, I can't remember the last time I have taken that trip in a car. It's a nice little trip there, kind of cool to see some of the parts of the city from the train, and of course go through the area where they shot part of TDK. lol. That makes two places to try right near the train exit there now, because I still have to go get America's Dog.

  17. @rpad

    thanks for the additional info but the one bsu and i are talking about is probably the most convenient. One is on the north side of the city where BSU will have to switch trains possibly twice to get to it. The other one on Jackson is a little more southwest of that Cultural Center and the fourth one idk if that serves coffee i thought they just roasted held tours and taught you the ways of the baristas.

    @bsu

    yeah i love that underground pedway scene in TDK. I know all the spots and have seen almost all the spots where TDK was filmed that movie was awesome and not just cuz it was filmed in Chicago.

  18. @rpad

    Good Luck, even though i know you won't need it. Does this means you'll move back to SF?

  19. @rpad

    I just saw they preferred their West Coast contributor to be in SF or Seattle, thought you were looking for a reason to move back.

  20. @Ray

    Good luck in the hunt, hope they are able to see the talent we all can see here everyday.

  21. @ Rpad

    Would you use your website for references lol? No joke though good luck man, and congrats to you too N8R. I need a new job I'm sticking to hospitals good pay and people always get sick (job security).

  22. @n8r

    congratulations on the job, hope you enjoy it and hope the people there arent prudish dicks

    i dont wanna know specifics, but are they paying you on salary or per hour?

  23. @rpad
    I said i’m working on it. i have to get used to drinking coffee right now. 2 cups a week is a lot and i feel all hyper and light headed when i drink it. Is that normal? Did you see my spoilarz post for inception?

  24. @ Thundercracker

    Salary. I start at 30k a year, after 90 days it will be 35k a year, after 180 days it will be 42k a year, and tearly raises after that with benefits and all that.

    I never took a graphics class in my life either. All school of hard knocks from making flyers and websites for bands.

  25. Wow, that's great, man.

    Party at N8's house! BYOB. Everyone bring a music game-related peripheral.

    -M

  26. @N8's party

    I think it should also be BYOG, bring your own game (favorite, most played…whatever).

    But I can bring my full band equipment for Guitar Hero along with almost all the games for xbox.

    @N8

    Congratulations again on the job. And that is great that they give you pay raises for being there longer. Sounds like a pretty good job overall.
