Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, rumors of Blake Lively posing nude, bamboo combs, or your favorite mustard, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

One of the most fascinating (and expensive) parts of E3 is its press conference. A handful of large publishers hold pressers, but the ones that matter most are held by the console manufacturers. Before the show floor opens, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony crank their hype machines to 11 and set the tone for E3. This year will surely be the same. What I really want to know is (Lenny Kravitz) which E3 2011 press conference are you looking forward to the most and why?

Nintendo and Sony will definitely be showing off new hardware. What will Microsoft do to compete with that? Which console will have the most exclusives? How about the best ones? How many times will Sony say, “I’m sorry.”? These are all things to consider when making your choice. So kindly pick one in the poll and expand on your choice in the comments section.

  1. I'm looking forward to Nintendo and Sony pressers more so than what MS will do this year. I want to see Sony put a spin on the PSN issue and since I'm a hardware geek, Nintendo's new machine will grab my attention. I'm also an old school gamer so Nintendo showing off Starfox on the 3DS would be a nice addendum.

Why I'm not looking forward to MS: More crappy Kinect thrown at my face. I have never used a Kinect and I never will. I don't care about it and I really don't want to see a bunch of suits up there pretending to have fun flipping virtual burgers or something equally less interesting. I know Kinect is huge to quite a few people (press and consumers) but MS will rest on its laurels this year.

    @Mustard

I like anything with lots of horse radish or wasabi in it. My favorite for a sandwich would be a remoulade (cajun mayo) and a horseradish spiced mustard. Delicious.

    1. Love remoulade! I've been using JR's honey mustard for the last week. It's good, but I wish it had more kick. I'll be putting together a quick video on JR's products — great stuff from a great man.

  2. @ Mustard

Anything spicy and/or honey laden is the best mustard in the book of John.

  3. I am the most excited about Nintendo however I am more curious as to what MS will be presenting. There are some nice rumors swirling aboot what MS has up its sleeve and I want to know/see if it is true. Nintendo has sucked to me since the Gamecube and seeing that (hopefully real) bad ass, big controller for their new console has me more perked up than a female celebrity's nipples on a cold, coked out day.

      1. I just get a blank black screen when I click on the link.

Then again, I am trying to get to the site from my work computer. Maybe the IT guys are one step ahead of me. That's going to have to change.

        -M

      2. By the way… if you thought there were some assholes that commented on G4… the site I linked has it all over them. I'm not sure any of those guys even like movies.

  4. I want to see a Sega presser talking about the Dreamcast 2… but that won't happen.

I think I'm most interested in Nintendo's products, but their pressers are usually as boring to watch as Euro League Football is. When I think of a Nintendo presser, I think of old people flailing around on the bland stage and laughing about it. No matter how impressive the products may be, an image like that is hard to shake. So, Big N has the best chance of selling to me.

I'm with Smartguy on the MS thing. I don't really care about Kinect or the advancements it's made. They may talk about that Steel Battalion game… but so what. I don't see any well hidden surprises coming from their camp aside from new franchises (which is always good in my opinion, but increasingly rare every year). The other "surprises" they could pull are predictable (Fable 4, New Halo… etc). If Ratchet & Clank or Uncharted 3 is coming to MS… I'll be surprised at something like that. However… the presser is always top notch so MS has the best chance of entertaining me.

The Sony presser… I don't really know what to expect except for Uncharted 3 stuff. I think Kaz will make one joke about the outage, and they will then play it off for the rest of the show. If they show some expansions and numbers on their (what seems to be failing) MMO games… that could interest me a little bit, but I doubt we'll hear anything. I'm not really interested in the NGP/Vita stuff (unless it's a phone too). So, Sony probably has the best chance to surprise me, but I'm not holding my breath.

So… I have no vote. I am equally unintrigued by the thought of any of them… but I hold out hope.

  5. I'm already going to buy the NGP (probably the 3G version), so the Sony conference will interest me the most. The price isn't as important to me as it will be to anybody else, since I've already decided and have enough money. What interests me the most is the software; what games will be released at launch? What sort of "apps" will be included in the package? When is it released? (I think it's already been spoiled as Nov. 11, but I'm not sure). What about it makes it more worth my money than Nintendo's 3DS? All these questions and more are ones I hope to be answered during E3 this year. Besides that, I want to know the status of the 3DS's first party games.

      1. I've decided on 3G for multiple reasons.

        1) The 3G device has more internal memory (not too special, but it would be nice).

        2) The 3G device will have more applications than the Wi-Fi only version. I want the apps.

        3) I don't have a 3G or 4G phone, and thus this will be my only 3G device. I cannot use my non-existent 3G or 4G phone as a wireless hotspot to connect to; internet connectivity in multiplayer games is extremely important, as just about nobody I know will be getting this device.

        4) I have a hunch that the 3G version will have things that the Wi-Fi only version cannot have, much like the differences between an iTouch and an iPhone (if they actually do exist, that is).

        5) There's a good chance that many of the games will utilize internet, and the internet connection at my summer job is really bad. Being able to connect to the internet will be a blessing, especially if it runs Netflix or Skype.

There you have it; my reasons for going 3G.

      2. Flavor? Um, Chocolate, I guess? I have no clue what's meant by that.

And, if a 4G version came out, I'd probably just trade up. Not much of a big deal there, as long as that's the only major change.

      3. I'm pretty new to this "carrier" deal, but I think I've narrowed it down to Verizon or AT&T. Verizon has better coverage, but AT&T has better upload speeds and WAAAAY better download speeds, which is pretty much what I'd use it for if I got one. At this point, AT&T is looking better, but you never know where I'll end up going in the next few years, and the extra coverage might be useful.

      4. You should expand how consistent the connections are. Verizon wins in that category and that is a bit more important. I don't think 3G is good for multiplayer gaming though. The latency is a killer for any game time. I'd save my money and get the cheaper version and hope that sony puts out a 4G model next year.

      5. I've seen the latency things; AT&T has the best latency speed, among the other things. I'm really excited for the launch either way, 3G or no. I expect that E3 will blow my mind this year, what with the Wii successor and NGP/Vita combined.

      6. Now, I'm not so sure. Apparently, I really should get Verizon, since they have the coverage where I need to be this each summer, but only AT&T is giving 3G. Not so sure anymore. I might just opt for the Wi-Fi version, though that won't make my position any better…

      7. @Lunias

From the better part of me traveling around the whole Southeast region…ATT's speeds are quoted from lab tests and not real world. I don't even know why they say fastest 3G when HSPA+ from TMo is faster. Marketing and money. Get the Wifi and root your phone :)

      8. PS: This might be new, and it might also be fake, but I just saw a PS Vita article on another site (Neoseeker) that said the device would be unable to tether to a smartphone. This would mean that, without buying the 3G version, you won't have 3G video gaming.

      9. Tethering is becoming a secondary option to setting up a mobile hotspot.

With a phone that can be used as a hotspot, all you need to be able to do is access wi-fi.

  6. Man tornados and thunderstorms are about 30 miles from my house and coming this way!

    1. Aside from the tornadoes that's good sleepin weather!

Are tornadoes common in the Northeast where you are?

      1. A few tornadoes hit Pittsburgh like 6 or 7 years ago.

I had never thought it possible before that. Blizzards in April… yes, Tornadoes… no.

      2. Exactly N8, all we need is an earthquake here and we would have gotten every kind of Earth anomaly this year lol.

      3. Biggest Earthquake known to have happened in North America was in Missouri (I saw that on How the States Got Their Shapes) so, don't dismiss it as impossible.

The craziest weather phenomenons I recall was:

        1) I was delivering pizzas in a hail storm where the hail was literally (no exaggeration) the size of billiard balls. I had to pull over in fear of smashing my windshield. Even parked, it felt dangerous as hell every time one smacked on my car which was like 9 of them per second. It was bad. It lasted for about 15 minutes.

        2) One particular rainy yet sunny day, I saw 2 rainbows in the sky simultaneously. Not only was it 2 rainbows, but both of them were in perfect circles with one inside the other. I had never seen or heard of anything like that before.

        3) It's called Ice Fog. It may sound like a Final Fantasy spell… but it's a real thing and dangerous as hell. I was with my brother (who was driving) when we hit a cloud of it going through the mountains. It was instantly icing over the entire car as soon as it made contact. He tried to turn on the wipers, but they came scarily close to freezing sticking up and it created too much stress on their motors. That sucked pretty bad.

      4. @N8

That fog sounds like a real pain.

Worst weather phenomenon for me: pick any hurricane. During Katrina I was drinking a beer and looking out of the living room window and could see the 30ft pine trees being bent to the ground and shot back up repeatedly. Oddly enough it was all black and white with the wind, rain and other floating debris.

**I know the beer sounds weird or irresponsible..but there is literally nothing to do for about 10 hours or so at the minimum and it was good for the nerves**

      5. I've never seen a hurricane, let alone something like Katrina. When it comes to catastrophic weather, NOLA has definitely been making a name for itself this past decade. I got no response.

But I can relate to the getting trashed thing. It doesn't sound irresponsible at all. Hell, if the power is out for any reason, what else is there to do (besides Monopoly).

      6. Worst weather I've seen has been some very intense snow storms which kept people indoors for quite a while (this was while living in Wisconsin so I suppose it wasn't too uncommon, but some are definitely worse than others). About 10 years ago the F4/F5 tornado going about half a mile past my house. It one of its smaller points it was a half mile wide, and when it went by my house it was close enough that later my family found out that we were looking right at it, but were close enough to not be able to tell what it was—we just saw a bunch of swirling debris, dirt, etc. Other than those things I've been fortunate enough to avoid most bad weather, but have to agree with Smartguy that a good storm is great to go to sleep to.

      7. @Strange weather

Seen a double rainbow 6-7 times within the last 2 years, never 2 complete ones though. There is actually a picture of the first one I saw on my FB page.

We just had softball size hail 4-5ish years ago. just about everyone's roof had to be replaced. We get hail A LOT. The big stuff happens at least once a year. Golf ball sized last time

Never seen Ice Fog, but we have lots of creeks and when the weather is just right and you cross a creek (on a bridge of course) your windows will all instantly fog up. I have had to pull over before because it was so bad.

      8. I live in Ohio, so crazy weather is unknown. However, crazy weather patterns… sure. Once, it hailed + snowed during the summer (last year, actually). Also last year, it downpoured for 3-5 days straight without letting up. In Ohio, we have this saying: "Only in Ohio can you go through all 4 seasons in a week, much less a day."

      9. @ N8

Nelson lol, I wasn't saying that it hasn't or didn't happen, I was just saying that's all we need and the cycle will be complete.

      10. no exciting weather here in va, but we have had tornadoes go through a walmart about 5 miles from my house…

there was a famous psychic named edgar cayce who supposedly said that the "safest" places in the united states to be during the apocalypse were virginia and utah….so i hope you guys will eventually move here so i can buy you a beer…i think death may actually be a better option than spending more than 5 minutes in utah

      11. Oh Mr Edgar Cayce, some of his predictions have been spot on, others not so much.

    1. Maybe it's just me, but I swear he looks like an older version of that kid from Dazed and Confused. haha.

  7. I think I have to say I'm looking forward to Nintendo's press event this year the most purely because I'd like to hear about anything more for the 3DS, and I am not overly excited by much that Microsoft or Sony are doing. Maybe it would be interesting to see what Sony has to say considering the breach of security they experienced, but they've never swayed me to their side much before, not convinced it will all of a sudden now. I don't know of any exciting first party things that MS is doing, so developers are more interesting to me at this point. New tech. and hardware will probably be next year, so that will be when Sony and MS get me excited about something. In addition to the 3DS I will probably be intrigued by the big N's new console development.

  8. ray

funny story ( i think anyways)

im almost ashamed to admit that ive become somewhat addicted to a facebook game…glory of rome. Anyways, a good friend of mine in this game told me today that he was going to e3. Obviously i was intrigued. Turns out that used to be head of PR for EA from 1993-2004. His name is David Lee, and he says that he has dealt with you several times, but doubted that you would remember him. We just spent an hour talking about all the great EA games for the genesis that he had a hand in creating/promoting. He now owns his own PR company, he left EA because he and the bosses there didnt see eye to eye on a number of things. I just thought that was interesting lol..but ive been wrong before!

  9. yeah his company is called concepticate…hes an AWESOME dude, ray..he also is in a band and plays guitar…i kinda wanna be just like that guy when i grow up..HA!!

    1. hes said that hell be talking to press about TERA, which is some sort of action MMO or something…maybe youll see him there

      ill stop talking now

      1. That's a Korean MMO. I was interested in it until I reminded myself I bought and played Aion for about 3 weeks and realized I didn't like grinding.
