What Do You Think of Windows 8 So Far?

Microsoft has released details and videos on its upcoming Windows 8 operating system. The new OS will run on traditional PCs (mouse and keyboard) as well as touch devices. From a UI and UX perspective, it’s a radical departure from Windows 7. Check out the video above to see the new UI and UX.

While I know it will have several cool and powerful features, I’m unimpressed with the debut video. I’m oversimplifying it, but Windows 8 looks like a version of Windows 7 with a Windows Phone interface slapped on.

The general vibe I get from Windows 8 is that Microsoft is trying to run ahead of Apple, but is stumbling trying to do so. It’s no secret that touch will be an integral component of future versions of Mac OS. In my head I see Steve Ballmer screaming, “We need to do that too!” and not really caring how the company gets there. While there are several features in the video that look “neat”, I just see Apple integrating touch in a better and more elegant way.

Kindly check out the video and let me know what you think of Windows 8’s debut.

  1. Touch is fine, but I dont think it's a good replacement for traditional controls for a desktop. The whole comfort thing.

I'd hate touch on my 27" iMac.

  2. Not going to be for me. My Windows 7 drive crapped out on me the other day (F$%& YOU SEAGATE and your stupid F'ing Seatools that says my drive is fine, clicking IS NOT FINE on a hard drive under a year old….or at all)

So I am back on XP, that is installed a damned 60Gb Maxtor that I have had for 6-7 years.

I never want to install another OS if HDD manufactures can't get their crap together. Lost my WD Raptor 2 years ago ($2,500 to recover data…..no thanks), then a 1.5TB Seagate and a 2TB, failed within in months of each other. I will never buy another HDD from Fry's.

      1. I have 6 hard drives in my PC right now they are are all nearly full and I don't have that kind of money to back up nearly 10Tb of data.

What I really need is a program that finds duplicate files and merges/deletes them. When I started losing drives I made tons of backups of my important stuff.

I could have had that data recovered here in Cali for no more than $200 (but most likely less). Considering postage, you still would have saved over $2000. That sucks.

I've never trusted Seagate. I give them all 2 years tops. With WD, 5 years is a safe bet.

    1. After they told me it would be so damn much and there was NO guarantee I decided to take it apart just for the hell of it, so it is probably fully corrupted now.

      1. Fully corrupted… it's still possible with a data scrub. The only real way to completely lose all data is to break the disk itself. I knew these guys that got a contract from the US Government to dispose of a few thousand HDD's. They had to have a bonded agent watch them do it and sign off on each one. The way they did it… they shot them one after the other with .45 caliber rounds. That did the trick.

However, the price does change to being between $500 and $850 (depending on the circumstances… I actually just left my boy's shop right now). Regardless… it would still save you money, and if I took it there they'd give me a deal.
