Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Trailer

Here’s the latest trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, the final (yeah right) chapter of the FFXIII saga. The video shows some familiar gameplay and familiar faces, along with some new elements. It ends with a teaser for a cool pre-order bonus that allows lightning to dress up in FFVII Cloud Strife’s SOLDIER 1st class uniform, complete with armband and Buster Sword. (That totally geeked me out.) Check out the clip and let me know what you think (please!).

The Final Fantasy XIII series gets a lot of heat from longtime FF fans, but I like the series. Sure, the world is confusing and there’s no exploration, but the art, music, and character building are fun. I’m looking forward to Lightning Returns and seeing how the story wraps up. Of course it will probably take me a decade to make sense of it all, but whatevs.

This Week’s Videogame Releases

Marvel’s merc with a mouth — the glorious Deadpool — leads the week in a game called…uh, Deadpool. As a huge mark for the character, I’m super looking forward to this one. Fans of beautiful, sword-slashing games will definitely want to pick up Muramasa Rebirth, an enhanced version of Muramasa: The Demon Blade. If you have the urge to get your motor runnin’ and long to get out on the highway then you should check out Ride to Hell Retribution.

Hopefully, some of you have the good taste to be Deadpool fanboys. So how about it? Any of you picking up new games this week?

E3 2013: Wolfenstein — The New Order Interview

I stopped by Bethesda’s E3 2013 booth to chat with MachineGames gameplay designer Sabine Rösgren to talk about Wolfenstein: The New Order. The game is set in an alternate version of the ’60s where the Nazis won World War II. Naturally, it’s up to William “B.J.” Blazkowicz to save the day. Wolfenstein: The New Order combines gameplay elements from the old-school Wolfenstein games with modern touches like laser weapons and giant robots. Check out the video above for more details from Rösgren. And yes, I totally bombed this interview because I instantly had a major, major crush on Sabine. Bethesda needs to warn people before they have to interview dreamy Swedish women that sound like Bjork.

What Do You Think of Kiefer Sutherland as Solid Snake?

Konami has confirmed that Kiefer Sutherland has replaced David Hayter as the voice actor for Solid Snake. Sutherland’s pipes will be heard in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. According to Polygon, Metal Gear Solid director Hideo Kojima chose Sutherland on the advice of producer Avi Arad (longtime Marvel producer). While many longtime MGS fans were bummed about Hayter being replaced, Kojima felt that a change was necessary for a 49-year old Snake and a new game:

The themes are a little different from previous games in the series. We’re taking on some heavy subjects, like race and revenge. As a result, I wanted Snake to have a more subdued performance expressed through subtle facial movements and tone of voice, rather than words.

It’s different from anything we’ve done before. I felt that he was the perfect fit, in terms of age and performance.

Sutherland has a lot of nerd fans from his work on 24. While he’s had a number of great movie and television performances, he’ll always be the guy from The Lost Boys and A Few Good Men to me. Those roles combined with the fact that Hayter has been voicing Solid Snake since 1998 will make Sutherland’s performance a strange experience for me, at least initially. Hopefully he’ll do a good enough job that gamers will get over the replacement quickly.

This Week’s Videogame Releases

The week before E3 is usually a dull one in terms of videogame releases. Still, there are few games that you should keep an eye on. Capcom’s Remember Me has been getting some buzz. This stealth-action game takes place in a futuristic version of Paris and uses some interesting sci-fi concepts. If you’ve missed out on Skyrim then you should consider picking up The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition, which has all the bells and whistles. Lastly, Marvel Heroes launches this week. As a comic-book nerd, I’m intrigued by this superhero MMO and wondering if any of you are interested in a spandex adventure (in the game, not in real life).

This Week’s Videogame Releases

There are two games that you should keep your eyes on this week. The (far) more interesting one is Fuse by Insomniac. This four-player cooperative action game is being published by EA and will be available on multiple platforms. I don’t remember the last time an Insomniac game was published by a company other than Sony (I think it was 1996, but don’t quote me on that) and it’s weird seeing a game from this stellar developer on a non-Sony console. Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria! The other release is GRID 2.

This week’s pairing reminds me of when Ricky Gervais introduced Tom Hanks and Tim Allen at the Golden Globes:

What can I say about our next two presenters? The first is an actor, producer, writer and director whose movies have grossed over $3.5-billion at the box office. He’s won two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes for his powerful and varied performances starring in such films as Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Castaway, Apollo 13, and Saving Private Ryan. The other is Tim Allen.

So yeah, the other is GRID 2. Ha!

Sanctum 2 Interview With Executive Producer Ted Lange

Here’s an interview with Reverb Publishing executive producer Ted Lange on Sanctum 2. The game was developed by Coffee Stain Studios for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It combines tower-defense strategy and first-person shooter action. Lange talks about improvements made over the original Steam-only game, the different types of levels, the various characters and classes, and more. Check out the interview and let me know if Sanctum 2 is something that interests you!

On a side note, I think this is the first videogame interview I’ve done that incorporates vaping. I’ve known Ted for a few years (I think we first met when he was working on the first Guitar Hero games) and I’m thrilled that he has made the switch from smoking to vaping.

PlayStation 3 Manufacturing Hits Brazil

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that some PlayStation 3 systems will be manufactured in Brazil. According to a company press release, the move is “expected to infuse the Brazilian economy with approximately $300-million over the next 12 months.” Brazil is no stranger to manufacturing consumer electronics. Foxconn, known primarily to nerds as Apple’s chief manufacturer, has a number of plants in the country, pumping out thousands of iOS devices daily.

To be completely honest, the reason I wanted to write about this “news” was so that I could reuse an image of Street Fighter Blanka. In my head, an army of Blankas will work diligently in a factory, assembling PlayStation 3 hardware while powering the facility the same time. That would be awesome. Yes, I realize that Cole MacGrath from inFamous would be a more appropriate choice, but Blanka is much funnier.
